In 1767, France issued 1.6 million copper Sols (valued at 9 Deniers) for use in the French Colonies in the Caribbean. The vast majority of these were counterstamped with an oval punch with the letters RF (Republique Francaise). Many of the counterstamped piece ended up in the American Colonies, where they circulated at the value of one Cent.
