It is wonderful to experience these snowy owls in the heart of their winter range. Their camouflage on a winter landscape is remarkable. Snowy owls (Bubo scandiacus) are native to the Arctic regions. By weight, they are the largest North American owl. They can weigh up to 6 pounds (3 kg), but the average would be less than that. Their wingspans are usually 4-5 feet (125-150 cm). The snowy owls summer range is north of latitude 60 N on the Arctic tundra. Their prey is usually small rodents, but they will also prey upon other small mammals and birds. Males, such as my photograph here, are almost all white, while females and juveniles have flecks of black. Snowy owls have yellow eyes.
